Short summary: This course encompasses an introduction to the work of Álvaro Vieira Pinto, taking into account some of the themes, currents of thought, and its development, with a special interest in Science, Technology and Society Studies.
This course not only scrutinizes some of the foundations of Álvaro Vieira Pinto’s conceptualization of technology but also examines his considerations regarding praxis and human existence (mediated, of course, by technology), taking into account the interlocution that the author maintained with currents of thought such as existential phenomenology, Hegelian philosophy, historical and dialectical materialism, formal and dialectical cybernetics, as well as with thinkers from the Latin American and European intellectual scene.
The pedagogic method consisted of reading and discussing the extensive philosophical treatises of this author. These were the main works read throughout the course editions:
- O Conceito de Tecnologia (2021 cohort)
- Ciência e Existência (2021 cohort)
- Consciência e Realidade Nacional (2022 cohort)
Reading these works resonated with the social-historical context experienced by PPGTE students. In 2021, they were facing the harsh reality of improvised remote learning technologies. Many of them were unsure to proceed with their studies and become scientists, hence reading Ciência e Existência made sense at that year. As for 2022, the approaching national elections created an opportunity to read Consciência e Realidade Nacional alongside critically observing the far-right populism of Jair Bolsonaro and the developmentalist populism of Lula da Silva.
